Home movie without audio. On 22 May 1983 during an airshow at the Rhein-Main Air Base, a Canadian CF-104 Starfighter crashed onto a nearby road, hitting a car and killing all passengers, a vicar’s family of 5. The pilot was able to eject. The Canadair CF-104 was a modified version of the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter supersonic fighter aircraft built in Canada by Canadair under licence. Over the course of the aircraft’s lifespan in service, some 110 were lost to accidents, earning the CF-104 the nickname of “Widowmaker” or “Lawn Dart” in the air force. The CF-104 was retired from service by the Canadian Forces in 1987.

CF-104 Starfighter – Crash 1983
– June 19, 2010Posted in: Urlaub

@giovmari, Many canadian CF-104 pilots intentionally deactivated the APC (automatic pitch control) when they were hard maneuvring close to the ground. No one doubted the utility of the system at high altitude where airspace for recovery was not a problem. But some felt that, at low altitude, the cure was worse than the disease. That the activation of the “kicker” at low altitude made the problem worse by “kicking them into the ground”
Rhein Main was my first duty assignment. I was working crowd control the day this crash occurred.
right when i said to myself ok dude time to get out of there boom he ejects lol
he pulled too many g’s in the turn, then deep stall combined with engine gyro effect. To do this the pilot disabled the stall warning system otherwise the stall recovery is automatic
Sadly an all too familiar story with the 104. Widowmaker and lawndart were just two of the many names awarded to this aeroplane.
@odisseo183 The pitch up effect was even worse for the F-101 Voodoo.
It was 1983.
The Starfighter-Crash killed five People.
All from one family.
it was a so-called “pitch up” effect. . . . fatal for that kind of plane!
I was there when this happened. My dad was stationed in Germany at the time. He and I attended the airshow. I never knew there was video of the crash. I was 11 years old at the time but I remember it very well.
Yes, during an airshow near the Rhein-Main Air Base.
this was in frankfurt
0:27. . . the pilot was ejected by the plane
Oh God! My condolences to all of them.
poor family
